Standard Torque Meter System

Standard Torque Meter System

Riverhawk, a leading innovator and developer of the on-shaft Standard Torque Meter System RDT2100, offers a digital design using Hall-Effect sensor technology and strain gauge bridges for unparalleled reliability in harsh environments. Riverhawk is the world’s only supplier of strain gauge based torque measurement systems for high performance couplings. Strain gauges are a proven technology and provide the most accurate way of measuring torque. They are the only way to obtain an instantaneous torque value.

The system consists of three key components. A monitor, that not only powers the entire system, but also displays the torque/speed/power as well as providing the option to provide analog outputs for each. The ESC (excitation and signal conditioning) module establishes proper signal conditioning, thus allowing the monitor to be located up to 2,000 feet away from rotating coupling. The instrumented coupling includes the strain gauge arrangements internal to the coupling along with integrated electronics to properly scale their linear output. RPM sensors are also incorporated with the instrumented coupling to measure coupling speed at any instant.

Riverhawk Torque Meters not only offer 100% redundancy, they also use proven components and thermal calibration; the output is not affected by coupling temperature changes. Since the torque measurement and temperature compensation are done within a span of a few inches on the shaft, the accuracy is not affected by temperature differentials typically seen across couplings. Competitors may calibrate over temperature, but they cannot compensate for a temperature differential across the coupling. We can calibrate our couplings in a static test stand, so we can very accurately measure the torque and verify repetition. The combination of lower cost and better performance makes the Riverhawk Torque Metering Systems a wise choice.

Benefits of our Torque Meter Systems

  • Works with most available couplings on the market with minor modifications, eliminating the need for coupling redesign
  • Less complicated coupling design
  • Temperature compensation of the unique “on-shaft” electronics reduces error in readings due to temperature variations and temperature gradients across the coupling; bonded strain gauge bridges provide reliable linear torque signals
  • The use of two rotary transformers, one supplying power to the electronics and the other transmitting the signals from the shaft precludes any need for bearings or slip rings to be used with the system
  • Savings derived from increased machinery efficiency may generate a quick payback while providing insurance against failures in equipment being monitored
  • Reduced weight compared to other systems; minimal weight suspended by coupling due to strain gauge technology
  • Less sensitive to coupling guard deflections
  • Superior with respect to the effects on balance and natural frequency compared to other torque metering technologies
  • No gear teeth to generate windage and heat in coupling guard
  • High Accuracy (within 1% full scale at temperatures below 250°F)
